Heading Off To Uni? Here’s How To Maximise Your Security

Heading off to university is an exciting and unique experience. You have the chance to meet new people and learn to be independent.

But student life does come with its challenges.

When you’re taking your valuables and electronics with you, it's important you know how to keep them safe.

The team at LockShop Direct have put together our top tips on how to stay safe at university - without the cost.

Out of sight, out of mind

Although tablets, smartphones and laptops are part of every student’s day-to-day life, they are a keen interest for burglars.

When you’re off out, make sure your valuables are hidden under your bed, at the back of your wardrobe, or even in a safe (if your budget allows this).

Burglars like to make a quick dash when targeting houses and are unlikely to search for what they want. By not having expensive items on display, they’re unlikely to think about stealing them.

Check your locks when you leave

Windows and doors are the most common entry points for burglars, so it’s important they can withstand potential break-in attempts.

Although it is usually the landlord’s responsibility to get quality locks installed, it’s worth checking for any sticking locks or wobbly handles. If you do have any concerns, make sure to report them to your first point of contact to rectify the issue.

Try not to overshare

While social media is now part of our lives, it’s important not to share your location, especially when you’re a fair distance from your accommodation.

If you’re in the town centre, away for a weekend, or having pre-drinks at your friends’ flat, don’t be tempted to put public stories on your social media accounts.

If you do, make sure your account is set to private, so only people you know can see your stories and locations.

Padlocks will be your best friend

Many security measures are too expensive for students, but a budget shouldn’t stop you from implementing safety precautions that keep you and your valuables safe.

Padlocks are an affordable and easy option for staying safe.

You can use it to lock up your cupboard in your room, or when you’re on the go to keep your bike locked up during lectures.

We stock a wide range of padlocks here at LockShop Direct. With many types and price points, there’s something for everyone when you shop with us.

You can choose from traditional padlocks that operate with a key or numerical code or opt for a smart padlock that you can open using your smartphone.

Whether you need a padlock or a safe, LockShop Direct are here to keep you and your valuables secure during your time at university.
