How to ensure your elderly or at risk family members remain safe!

This can be an extremely serious issue, for instances where the individuals may be frail, suffering from dementia or depression and loved ones or careers may need to access the home in an emergency.

That’s why here at Lock Shop Direct our team are always investigating and identifying possible solutions to real-world challenges that our customers face on a day to day basis and when it comes to such an emergency of being locked out of an elderly loved one’s home we have the perfect solution: thumb turn locks.

What is a Thumb Turn Lock?

A thumb turn lock continues to provide security for the home while, ensuring that as long as the individual trying to enter the home has a key they can’t be locked out. It works by having an external key lock, while internally the lock is a simple thumb turn system.

This makes the system great for those with elderly relatives who may sometimes leave the key in the lock, therefore locking anyone else out of the house, which can be troublesome in cases of an emergency or if a caregiver needs to attend to administer medication, treatment or meals.

Things to consider with Thumb Turn Locks

Though simple to use and an extremely affordable solution for those with elderly or at-risk family members, there are a number of key things to consider before making such a change. In instances where a family member may suffer from dementia it can sometimes be difficult for them to learn new skills, so getting them to remember to lock the door or how to use the thumb turn lock may potentially be difficult. Also in homes that may contain young children, such locks are easily accessible, meaning young children could potentially unlock the door leaving the house unsecured, overnight, if an adult doesn’t notice.

All in all, thumb turn locks are a perfect solution for ensuring you don’t get locked out by elderly or at risk family members in instances of an emergency, and here at Lock Shop Direct we supply a number of various products starting from as little £8.54 with the Carl F Open Profile to one of the more popular cylinders, the Yale Superior, which is priced at £20.77. You can browse our full range of thumb turn locks here or feel free to contact our advice line on 0845 830 0832 and let one of our expert team help you find the perfect locking solution.

An Alternative to the Thumbturn

If you’ve read the above and still aren’t fully convinced that a thumbturn cylinder is the right way to go then maybe the best solution is a brand new product to Lock Shop Direct; the Cisa Astral S Cylinder. This may look like any standard cylinder however it is fitted with a clutch cam as standard meaning the lock can still be used from the outside even when a key is in the lock on the inside. This solves any locking out issues you may have without having to consider whether or not to get a thumbturn lock.
