Regrettably, many businesses have had to shut their doors to members of the public during the lockdown, and staff are being instructed to work from home to help slow the spread of coronavirus. It’s a worrying time for us all – but particularly if you’re looking to keep your business secure during the shutdown period.
Create a site plan
The security of your business always starts on the outside, so you need to familiarise yourself with the overall layout and how it fits with the surroundings. Use an online mapping tool to get a site overview and mark on:
- perimeters
- entrance and exit driveways
- ·vehicle access routes
- pedestrian footpaths
It’s also worth adding information about adjoining properties (i.e. where the boundaries meet), and details of walls, fences or secret alleyways that could be used as a quick getaway for opportunistic thieves!
Most site plans will include external doors, but you should also consider other entrance points, including windows on the ground floor, fire escapes, ladders and stairways leading down from higher levels. As well as emergency doors at the side and rear of the building and loading bays.
Check your locks and entry systems are secure
We highly advise that all your window and door locks are properly fastened and not left on the catch during the lockdown. Remember to remove keys from window and door locks and keep them in a safe place, out of sight of prying eyes. It’s also a good idea to check with your keyholders to see how many keys are in use and exactly who has access to your building.
Your windows and doors need to resist forced entry. If they don’t – don’t panic. Here at LockShop Direct, we supply a fantastic range of window and door locks, ranging from mortice locks and latches to smart locks and cylinders, in leading brands, such as ERA, Union and Yale.
