Top tips to improve your home security

Your home is 5 times more likely to be burgled than a home with simple security measure in place.   These are some of the measures that you can take to protect your home.

 1.    Secure all doors and windows

73% of burglars gain entry via a door and you're 6 times more likely to be burgled without window locks and double locks or deadlocks on outside doors.  Make sure the locks on all of your external doors are adequate and consider fitting a bar to doors for extra strength.  All windows that are accessible should be fitted with window locks.  An MLA registered locksmith can advise on the security solutions that are suitable for your property.

2.     Keep garages and sheds locked and secure

In addition to being an easy target for the theft of valuable items such as power tools garages and sheds often contain equipment that burglars can use to gain entry into your home.  Items such as ladders, crow bars and screwdrivers can all be used to force access and break in.  Ensure your shed and any outbuildings are fitted with high security padlocks.

3.    Install a burglar alarm

A visible burglar alarm is a great deterrent and burglars will often choose a house without one.   It is recommended that the code is regularly changed.

4.    Light it up

Install external floodlights with motion detectors, these will activate and alert you when someone is on your property.  A burglar wants to remain unseen so this is an easy to install deterrent against theft.  You may need to purchase a number of security lights to ensure all areas of your property are covered.

5.    Keep your valuables secure in a home safe

In the event that a burglar does gain entry into your property make sure you consider keeping your   valuable and sentimental items that can’t be replaced in a safe.  There are many different types of home safes including wall safes and underfloor safes that will keep your valuables secure and hidden.  Safes can be used to store cash, jewellery and personal documents and prevent them from being stolen.  Make sure your safe is installed by a qualified safe engineer to ensure it is securely fixed and cannot be removed.

The eSafes online shop stocks a wide range of safes suitable for all budgets.
