What A Burglar Looks For - Part 1

Here at Lock Shop Direct we are always bringing you advice to stop burglars but this week we’re taking a different tact and looking at things through their eyes. Below are ‘tricks of the trade’ that a thief will use against you.

  • They will always knock to check who is home. If you answer they will just come up with a bogus story or ask for directions. We advise using a door viewer and if you don't recognise them don't open the door.
  • If you don’t answer they will always try the door. Sometimes they’ll hit lucky and be able to walk straight in and do a quick smash and grab.
  • A burglar will usually be smartly dressed or be wearing a phoney uniform to look like a utility company worker. Your neighbours won’t wonder why someone professional looking is knocking at your door.
  • You might think they will try and strike at night-time but most will operate from 10am to 3pm. No one is going to suspect the workman going about his business during the day right?
  • They maybe in cahoots with a workman who has previously been to your home. Remember the builder you had round who nipped to use your toilet? He could have been unlocking a door or a window for to make his friends route into your house easier.
  • They will keep an eye on mail or newspapers piling up to see if you are on holiday. Some will even leave a pizza menu half sticking out your letter box as a marker to see how long it takes you to remove it.
  • In the winter snow can become good ally to a burglar. They will check to see if you have left foot prints as an indicator to see if you are home or not.
We’ll bring you more next week in part 2.
