Which Padlock Should I Choose?

From simple lock and key to combination and heavy-duty, there’s an array of padlocks available on the market, so it’s no wonder it can be confusing to decide which one you need.

Throughout this blog, we’ll explore the main types of padlocks, their uses and ultimately, which one you should choose.

What are the different types of padlocks and their uses?

There are multiple types of padlocks available, each with specific uses and applications. Keep reading to find out which is most suited to your needs.

Brass padlocks

Brass padlocks are probably the most recognised type of padlock. These locks have a simple lock mechanism that uses a key and pin tumbler, so there are no codes to remember.

Apart from simplicity, there are more reasons brass padlocks remain the favoured choice on the market.

- Waterproof

Brass repels the effects of corrosion and rust as it’s completely waterproof. As shed doors and gate doors are exposed to the elements, this is an incredibly vital property.

A rusty lock isn’t effective in keeping thieves out - it can be easily broken and opened, leaving goods unprotected.

- Strength

The brass lock body is incredibly strong and durable, as is the hardened steel shackle. This is because brass is an alloy metal made up of different metals such as copper, iron, and zinc.

General wear and tear and trespassers will fail to weaken a sturdy brass lock.

Combination padlocks

Combination padlocks offer everything a traditional brass padlock offers. However, they differ in their lock/unlock mechanisms.

Instead of a key, a combination lock is opened and secured using a combination dial. Usually, the combination is a sequence of numbers. The numbers typically range from 0 - 9 and are applied to individual spindles that rotate to align in the correct combination.

High security/heavy-duty padlocks

Available in key or combination models, a heavy-duty padlock offers extra protection due to its hardened body and shackle.

These padlocks are manufactured from hardened carbon and stainless steel.

Hardened carbon offers high strength and cutting, wear, heat and impact resistance.

This makes it perfect for adding extra protection to expensive goods, as intruders can’t damage or weaken them.

Stainless steel is highly corrosion resistant, meaning the shackle won’t deteriorate in the rain.

Marine weatherproof padlocks

Although many padlocks are weatherproof to an extent, a weatherproof padlock resists the constant effects of all weather.

This padlock is specially designed for use in marine applications as it can do the following:

  • Hold humidity
  • Resists rusting caused by saltwater
  • Withstand cracking in sunlight and extreme temperatures

A marine weatherproof padlock is capable of the above as it’s constructed from stainless steel with a rust-proof pleated exterior to prevent oxidation.

Some brands, such as Master, include a thermoplastic cover to add even further protection from the sun and heat.

Which padlock should I choose?

To determine which padlock to use, consider why you need it.

Ask yourself:

What is the value of goods that require protection?

Opt for a heavy-duty lock when protecting higher-value goods at lockups, as they’re hardened and resist cutting by thieves.

For less risky properties such as garden sheds, a traditional brass padlock is sturdy enough.

Whether you want a key or combination lock

If you’re prone to misplacing items, you may prefer a combination lock, as a key isn’t required.

However, if you’re forgetful and likely to forget your code, a traditional lock and key padlock is the best for you.

Where do you need to use it?

If your padlock will be exposed to extreme weather frequently, a marine weatherproof padlock is perfect.

These locks are designed to cope with high temperatures, sun and saltwater damage.
