How To Secure Your Doors & Windows

As part of National Home Security Month theme (NHSM) we’re continuing to look at securing your windows and doors.

Winter is coming and it is bringing dark evenings with it. Traditionally, when the clocks go back and the darkness sets in, home invasions and crime rates increase.

In fact, the NHSM website explains that home burglaries increase by 20% during the period. That’s why it’s so important to ensure that you think about home security, particularly when it comes to windows and doors.

If you’re looking to bolster home security this October, why not take a look at your windows first? While doors are often adequately locked, many windows aren’t; and they’re usually a criminal’s first port of call.

Of course, an intruder is going to want to draw as little attention to themselves as possible, so smashing a window is out of the question. Instead, a burglar will try to pry the window frame open to get inside. With at least one appropriate window lock on each window, it’s possible to make this extremely difficult to do; at least without a lot of time and effort.

A burglar doesn’t want that time and effort because it leaves them exposed and they run the risk of getting caught. They want the path of least resistance and make no mistake: they’ll take it, even if it means opting for an upstairs window.

Here at Lock Shop Direct, we can provide locks for all window frames and fixtures; including wooden, aluminium or PVCu windows.

Often, door security is a little more up to scratch but it’s important to ensure that this is the case. The home security month site recommends that external timber doors should be secured with a mortice lock or nightlatch which meets the British Standard BS3621. We offer many locks approved to this standard, by the biggest brands in the security industry; and we also offer euro profile cylinders for PVCu doors which meet the British Standard Kitemark TS007.

But the best lock in the world can’t safeguard an open door, so this winter why not invest in additional door security, like a door chain, spyhole or digital door viewer?

From friends and family to carol singers and even trick-or-treaters, a variety of people are going to knock on your door between now and the New Year. With a chain or a viewer you can ensure that you know exactly who’s calling before you welcome them in.
