Week 2 of National Home Security Month, sponsored by Yale, is well under way. The theme of this week is ‘Secure your Doors and Windows’. According to the guys at National Home Security Month: “Many burglars will avoid smashing a window and will instead try to force the window frame itself, so it’s important that all windows in your home are fitted with at least one appropriate lock.” It costs less than you might think to boost your home security. With minimal time and limited expense, you could start with your windows and doors. Door locks come in all shapes and sizes, with prices to match. Depending on what you’re willing to spend, it is possible to give burglars are much harder time of forcing their way into your home. From nightlatches to mortice locks and door cylinders there are a number of door security solutions to choose from. Anti snap locks are popular and won’t cause too much of a headache to install. Security specialists Yale manufacture a wide range of anti snap door cylinders made from nickel or brass. Both are extremely secure. You just need to touch the finish which suits the door best. But while a strong door lock is a major boon, one of the biggest security sticking points has to be broken window locks. UPVC windows are more popular than ever; and with good reason. They help rooms to retain heat, they cancel out noise and they simply look great. But UPVC window handles can break and when they do they make life very easy for thieves. Some people think that they need to go back to the original provider of their UPVC windows for replacement window locks and window handles. They also think that these specialists might have to tackle the job of installing the new handle. Neither are true. It’s fairly simple to install and new UPVC window handle or lock. But doing so could greatly improve the security of your home. Next week (14 October – 20 October), our friends at eSafes will suggest some great ways to protect your valuables this winter via their own brilliant. This will be particularly handy once Christmas time rolls around. The week after that (21 October – 27 October) we’ll be talking about outside protection right here and suggesting some great security solutions for sheds, garages and motor homes. Until then, let’s focus on getting our doors and windows as secure as possible. Because burglars don’t like hassle and it’s time to give it to them.
