Padlocks - Do I need one?

Padlocks are an affordable and easy way to keep your valuables safe, whether they’re indoors or out.

They’re most commonly used for outdoor entranceways overnight or when no one’s in the building. A lot of home and business owners use padlocks as a secondary security measure alongside alarm systems and CCTV cameras.

Many people believe they don’t need one if they already have measures in place to keep themselves safe, but is this enough?

Here we take a look at why you should buy a padlock for your home, and give you a brief outline of the types of padlock we have available at Lockshop Direct.

Why do I need a padlock?

Being one of the cheapest and easiest security measures to set up, padlocks are guaranteed to keep your possessions protected from harm’s way.

They can be used for everything from sheds to factory doors and are known for being durable when it comes to both extreme weather conditions and daily wear and tear. Most commonly made from hard-wearing metals, they’re built to last and ward off thieves.

You need a padlock if you have an unlocked area with expensive equipment. If you have an outdoor shed that holds tools, garden furniture and your lawnmower, investing in a padlock adds an extra level of protection to your valuables.

Many businesses use padlocks to secure external gates and prevent unwanted access to the main building.

Are there different types of padlocks?

There are a few varieties of padlock, and the right one for you depends on how you wish to unlock it.

Probably the most common type is a key opening padlock. This is useful as only those with the key can lock and unlock the padlock. However, you have to make sure you have the key on you at all times, and make copies for anyone that needs one.

There are also code accessible locks, which require a combination of numbers and/or letters to open. The code will be difficult for intruders to guess, therefore preventing entry. But you will have to remember the unique combination yourself.

Advances in technology have also led to advances in the security world, including locks. There are now digital and Bluetooth padlocks. This means you can lock and unlock areas of your house or office directly from your smartphone.
