Snap Out Of It - Keep Your Door Locks Secure

Week 2 of National Home Security Month is focused on keeping doors and window secure as they are the two main areas that burglars will look to exploit when they try to break in.

So with this in mind we’re going to run through the advantages of anti-snap door cylinders and how they will ultimately improve the security level of your home.

Over the past few years there has been a dramatic rise in break-ins using what is known as the lock snapping method. This is a form of attack which makes UPVC doors particularly vulnerable. As this video shows below it can only take 13 seconds for a thief to snap your lock and be into your house.

So how secure are your UPVC doors at home? Would you be able to sleep knowing a burglar is only 13 seconds away from your valuable possessions? Another worrying thing with this method is that the thief doesn’t make much noise so in theory you could sleep straight through it all.

However it’s not all doom and gloom; the invention of anti-snap door cylinders has helped fight this problem. Here’s how it works:

  1. The front part of the lock is sacrificed and breaks off during the attack.

  2. When the front section is removed the remaining part of the lock forms a barrier which cannot be breached by the thief.

  3. Best of all the remaining internal part of the cylinder still works so your door can be opened from the inside.

Here at Lock Shop Direct we always advise our customers to switch to this type of lock as they are the best product available on the market at present. What’s more you can get them fairly cheap with prices starting under £20. Two that we’d recommend are the Yale Anti-Snap and the ABS Anti-Snap cylinders
