What A Burglar Looks For - Part 2

Here is part 2 in our series which takes a look at the world through the eyes of a burglar (click here to read part 1). What are they looking for? What are their tricks of the trade? Find out here:

  • Most home alarm systems have the control panel just inside the front door. A burglar will try and see through the glass in your door to find out what type of system you have.
  • Burglars love a rainy day. The number of houses which are accidentally left unlocked due to the owner scrambling around with umbrellas as they leave is more than you’d think.
  • They don’t have time to break into your home safe when they’re in your house but they’ll simply take it with them if it’s not bolted down and work on it when they get home.
  • Some burglars will get wise to lights coming on using timers but the noise and light from a television will put them off and they won’t risk it.
  • They are prepared to smash a window in broad daylight even if it makes a loud noise. Most neighbours might mute the television after the first noise but when there is no follow up noise they’ll go back to their show and not give it a second thought.
  • Social media is another weapon in the burglar’s arsenal. They will try and find you on Facebook and keep an eye on you. So be careful not to broadcast your nice 2 week holiday in the sun as you don’t know who is watching.
  • When they’re in your house they’ll always check the following areas:
  • Bathroom cabinets – prescription pills can be easily resold
  • Bed side cupboards & sock drawers – perfect place to find jewellery, watches or passports.
  • Under beds and cupboards
  • Children’s rooms – here they are looking for games consoles, DVD’s and tablets which are quick and easy for them to resell.

Now you know what they’re looking for make sure you’re doing your part to stop them by keeping your home fully secure.
