Product Information

This GU Key Wind multipoint door lock features 4 Rollers, 1 Deadbolt & 1 Latch.

The GU range of Key Wind multipoint door locks is only available in a single option. The lock is unique as it comes with a 10mm spindle and 4 roller configuration. You may find that some suppliers refer to GU locks as "Ferco" or "GU Ferco", as that is how they have been historically named. At Duffells, we refer to 92mm PZ locks using the modern name, "GU" while older 70mm PZ locks are called "Ferco".

Identifying a GU lock is straightforward as GU stamp their logo on the faceplate of their locks. However, if you have an old door to repair, the GU lock may be the old, original style, rather than the new version.

Over a decade ago, GU significantly revised their range of multipoint locks, moving from the old to new style. Once the lock is removed from the door, if you see that you have an old style lock case (with the top corner cut out) then you may be able to repair the lock using a replacement gearbox. However, if you need a replacement lock (for example, if you require split spindle operation, as that functionality is not available on old style replacement gearboxes), it is possible to replace an old GU multipoint lock with the new version. You may find that the centre deadbolt and latch keep need readjusting to accommodate the new lock, but its a simple task.

If you need to replace handles, you will need to utilise part "SPINSLEEVE10" to convert the spindle from 8mm to 10mm, which allows the lock to be used with a standard set of handles. Often that would be a lever fixed/pad version or a pull handle.

In 1979, Gretsch-Unitas presented the GU-SECURY multi-point locking system with roller cams for doors at the Deubau Trade Fair in Essen, Germany, and launched it on the market. In the years that followed the versions with pin bolt and SH bolt were developed. In 1996, GU created the first self-locking multi-point locking system for doors with GU-SECURY Automatic.

New style GU Key Wind gearboxes are available in a variety of different operations and one of the biggest ranges of backsets on the market. They are available in 35mm, 45mm and 65mm backsets.

New style GU locks can be differentiated from their old style equivalents by the shape at the top of the gearbox. Old style locks have the top corner removed, whereas new versions feature a vertical groove to help with bolts for handles. The two gearboxes are not compatible, so a new style gearbox will not fit on an old style multipoint lock.

GU multipoint lock gearboxes feature a latch and deadbolt and measure 191mm high (excluding the fixing lugs) by the backset + 16mm wide. The latch is 32mm high, the deadbolt measures 35mm high and there is 54mm from the bottom of the latch to the top of the deadbolt.

GU gearboxes are fixed to their faceplates with 3 screws. The distance from the top to the middle screw is 108mm, while the middle screw to bottom screw is 92mm.

Always allow 2mm when measuring your backset and the faceplate is still attached to the gearbox.

Rollers are used for compression, to pull the door against the frame, to help prevent dust or water ingress. They do little for security, but they also have the added benefit of helping to prevent the door from becoming warped as it is supported across its full height. This is dependent on the rollers being engaged into their keeps.

Rollers are normally adjustable by +/- 1mm to help achieve optimum weather sealing.

Operation: Key Wind

To lock the door

1. On closing the door, the latch is automatically engaged.

2. Turn the key to throw and engage or "wind" out the locking points.

To unlock the door

1. Turn the key to unlock the door by "unwinding" the locking points.

2. A further quarter turn of the key will retract the latch.

We stock a range of associated products for GU Key Wind multipoint door locks, including keeps, spindles, handles and accessories.

Latch reversal: Push a flat bladed screwdriver into the small rectangular slot above spindle and pull out latch at same time. reverse and reinsert.

You may find this lock used as an UPVC door lock or an aluminium door lock.
