Changing Attitudes Toward Home Security

It's National Home Security Month and over the course of the next few weeks Lock Shop Direct and our sister site eSafes will be highlighting a variety of brilliant security products to look after your home as the dark evenings of winter set in.

In the meantime, there are plenty of simply methods for safeguarding your home which don't cost a penny. For many people, all it takes is a change of attitude toward home security.

National Home Security Month was conceived to raise awareness of issues which many people overlook or take for granted. With a family and a full time job to worry about from day to day, some might think they don't have time to worry about enhancing their home security. But many proven ways to keep unwanted attention at bay take seconds.

One extremely simple home security win is making sure that all windows are closed before you leave the house. An open window is an invitation to a burglar whether you think the window is accessible or not. Of course, at temperatures drop in the run up to Christmas, it's less likely you'll have a number of windows open anyway. But this remains an important home security rule.

Keeping valuables out of view from the street is another must-do. Locking windows and doors will often do the trick, in preventing a thief, but if your treat windows like shop fronts, you may encourage them to try their luck anyway. Keeping your prized possessions out of sight should do the trick in most instances. They certainly stand a better chance than if they're left for the whole world to see while you're away from home.

Stay tuned to the Lock Shop Direct blog this October for much more on National Home Security Month, from the best ways to boost security on your windows and doors to looking further afield at garages, sheds and even mobile homes.
