What are fire rated mortice locks?
Fire rated mortice locks are designed for use on emergency and fire exit doors.
They fit inside a pocket of the door and, as a result of being embedded into the door for additional strength, they provide a secure locking point in the centre of the door.
Mortice locks are renowned for being extremely secure – making it difficult to force open from the outside. However, fire doors usually have a latch fitted to allow people to exit quickly and safely when a fire breaks out.
Fire rated mortice latches have no locking mechanism. Instead, they are opened and closed using a handle or push bar.
Mortice deadlocks and night latches are operated by a key.
With deadlocking nightlatches, the bolt is withdrawn using the internal lever or a key from the outside. They also feature an internal button which can be used to hold the latch back – keeping the door unlocked to save having to unlock it repeatedly. Alternatively, the latch can be held in a locked position to prevent the key from turning, adding an extra line of security by preventing entry.
Also within the collection of fire rated mortice locks, you’ll discover sashlocks. Mortice sashlocks use a deadbolt, latch and handle mechanism and can be opened and closed without worrying about them locking behind you. These locks are typically used on 60-minute timber fire doors, as well as steel and composite doors using special fixings.
