Outside Thinking For National Home Security Month

Just two weeks of National Home Security Month, sponsored by Yale, remain. This week (21-27 October) the focus is on Outside Protection; because when it comes to protecting your property from loss or theft, it pays to do a little outside thinking.

It's easy to forget about our sheds in the bleak midwinter. But this makes them a target for thieves. Early sunsets provide them with the cover of darkness. Worse still, many underestimate the value of the shed contents and don't provide the proper safeguards and protection.

Thankfully, it's relatively simple and cost effective to give shed security, and other safeguards a boost.

When it comes to keeping a great looking shed, all it takes is a little maintenance from time to time. The same applies to the padlock and hasp which protects what's inside. Over time, hasps have a tendency to rust; particularly after several heavy winters. It’s important to ensure that this hasp stays in the best condition possible, because the padlock that you attach to it is only as useful as the hasp itself.

You could spend top dollar on a hulking padlock by a big brand security specialist like Yale. But if the hasp attached to the shed door is allowed to rust and decay, it's unlikely to make a difference.

Another big recommendation for discouraging shed thieves this winter, is giving them as little reason to choose your shed as possible. This is accomplished by keeping valuable items away from windows wherever possible.

Modern sheds are a goldmine of valuable goodies, including road bikes worth thousands of pounds. If your two-wheeled pride and joy is spending winter in the shed, it's a good idea to keep it out of sight. That way any opportunistic thieves aren’t likely to go out of their way to break in. Gardening tools don't have the same allure.
