Plant Power: Could Rhubarb Stop A Robbery?

You either love rhubarb or you hate it, but what you mightn't realise is that it could prevent a burglar from breaking into your house.

The Metropolitan Police have released a list of 30 plants which could protect your property from home invaders. The list includes giant rhubarb, holly and gooseberry bushes.

Nothing beats high quality home security products when it comes to protecting your home, and no amount of plant life will beat a robust lock or security system. But when it comes to combating thieves, every little solution helps, and the plants in question contribute to an important security factor: deterrence.

One of the keys to home security is to discourage robbers in any way possible. While the first port of call should always be the installation of door and window locks, and other security features, a strategy placed shrubbery could bolster your good work.

According to the Met, giant rhubarb could make a home more secure by discouraging thieves with its ‘abrasive foliage’. Gooseberry bushes feature painful spines and a number of spiny plants make the list.

We’ve said ourselves a number of times, thieves are lazy. They’re always on the look-out for an easy target. Homes with a row of prickly hedges are anything other than easy. In fact, they go beyond difficult to being downright painful.

The list is topped by the Creeping Juniper, known for its thorny stems and foliage. Blue Spruce has rigid branches and spiky needles. It’s worth bearing in mind that all the flora on the list is going to take a considerable amount of time to grow.
