How do fingerprint padlocks work?

Fingerprint padlocks take the same form as traditional padlocks and chains. The only difference is that, instead of using a key to unlock it, you use your finger. When you first receive your lock, you'll need to "code" it to the correct fingerprint - this can be yours, or someone else's, or you can often assign multiple users.

Following the instructions, you'll simply place your finger over the scanner. This uses a combination of light and electricity to map the ridges of the finger that are unique to each person. It'll then save each fingerprint, ensuring only users with the saved prints can ever open the lock. The whole process takes just minutes!

In terms of security, you want to relax knowing that your belongings are secure; therefore, it's worth keeping an eye out for padlocks with shackles made from hardened steel, as they are strong enough to hold up (almost!) anything.

And lastly, ask yourself how many people will need to open the padlock. Most biometric padlocks can recognise up to 10 different fingerprints – great for commercial environments and instances where multiple users require access.
