Hasps & Staples

Padlocks and chains have been in use for centuries and remain a common security feature on buildings, particularly on garage doors and shed doors, or to secure gates, even though more advanced security systems have been developed. However, padlocks are still widely used as secondary locking mechanisms, especially for securing toolboxes, storage boxes and more. In a padlock locking system, a hasp is essential to ensure that your belongings are safely secured.

At LockShop Direct, we're home to a wide selection of hasps & staples you can use to secure your belongings with high security padlocks, combination padlocks, CEN rated padlocks and more. Browse our range and add the most suitable hasps & staples to your basket for fast, reliable delivery. Looking for something specific? Use our filters to head straight to the security hardware you can use to protect your goods from attack and keep burglars at bay.

What is a Hasp?

A hasp is a fastener attached to a door or cover, consisting of a hinged metallic strap or band that fits over a staple (a metal loop). It is typically secured by a pin or a padlock shackle. Simply put, the hasp is used to fasten a lid, door, or lockable cover. The hinged section of the hasp features holes that allow for mounting screws. When closed, the slotted end of the hasp fits over a securely fixed staple, and the padlock slides through the staple to lock the hasp in place.

Types of Hasps and Staples

Today, there are various types and styles of hasps and staples available, some designed for specific uses while others have aesthetic features. Regardless of the design, all hasps and staples function in the same manner. You can choose from solid brass hasps, which are available in burnished brass, refined brass, and refined chrome finishes. Hasps also vary in materials, thicknesses, and intended uses. The staple is usually a curved rod made of hardened steel or other durable metal alloys, making it difficult to cut. In some cases, the fastener is hardened around the slotted end for added security.

Some manufacturers design the staple to rotate, making it more difficult to open. We offer a wide selection of hasps and staples, allowing you to select the ideal option based on your security requirements and personal preferences. We also provide lighter hasps for securing valuables in confined spaces like offices, homes, or garages. Some hasps are ribbed for enhanced security.

Depending on the material used and the environment in which the fastener will be used, some hasps and staples are coated to prevent rust and corrosion.

Special Hasps and Staple Locking

In most cases, hasps and padlocks are separate items, but some special hasps are designed with an integrated padlock, known as a hasp-lock. These may feature warded locks or pin tumbler locks. Additionally, there are various types of hasps and staples designed to address specific needs, with new innovations and market demands influencing their design. For example, heavy-duty hasps are designed to be resistant to forced entry and tampering.

Whatever your security needs or budget, you can find a hasp and staple combination that is durable and meets your requirements.
