What is a thumbturn cylinder?
Thumbturn cylinders, also written ‘thumb turn cylinders’, are a type of lock that allows you to easily open and close doors from the inside. The thumbturn fits directly below the door handles or knobs and, when the turn is rotated, it throws a deadbolt, locking the door.
The most common type is a bathroom thumbturn lock, which provides privacy and can be used in conjunction with a bathroom deadbolt and lever on rose door handles. A euro cylinder lock is another type. When used on the front door, it will allow the user to lock the door on the outside using a key and a thumbturn from the inside.
Are thumbturn locks less secure?
Many people worry that thumbturn cylinders are less secure due to the risk of burglars reaching the turn through the letterbox (either using their hand or wire) to grant themselves access. However, you can easily alleviate this by installing a letterbox protector on the inside of the door, making it impossible for thieves to reach the thumbturn.
Often, thumbturn locks are a fire safety requirement in shared accommodation and apartment blocks. In the event of a fire or emergency, residents can leave faster as they don’t need to hunt for their keys or fiddle around inserting them into the lock. They simply use the thumbturn and evacuate quickly. Again, a secure thumb turn cylinder and letterbox protector are a must-have at such properties to ensure maximum protection.
